New Year's Resolutions

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 2 comments

Well, I can't believe it's that time again!  The new year is about to start and it is the perfect time to set some resolutions.  I have been thinking about what I want to accomplish in 2012 and here is what I have:

1.  ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE!  I would like to continue organizing files at school and
     finish organizing at home!
2.  PRAY EVERY DAY.  I have been making a habit of taking the time to say a prayer of thanks for all I
have been able to accomplish.  I am so thankful I have been able to teach so many children!
3.  BETTER MANAGE MY TIME.  I need to continue to find a balance between work, home, and other
things (FB, TpT, TN to name a few).
4.  RAMP UP THE EXERCISING!  I definitely don't look like I did when I first started teaching (Can
you say snacks in the teacher's lounge?!?)  This year, I need to find a way to take care of my body.
Since I have little time, I may work out using Zumba on my Promethean Board after school.
5.  BE THE BEST ME I CAN BE! As Oprah always said, "You can't be the best (enter famous name of
choice), but you can be the best YOU!" I am going to stretch myself to the limits of my teaching
capabilities and see where it takes me! :0)

Do you have resolutions for the New Year?  If yours go along with mine, just reference the number above.  I'd love to know I'm not alone in these goals!!!  Happy New Year!

Check out my newest product, Jivin' January:  A Winter Theme Unit!  You can get to it by clicking on the picture below. In it, I included everything I will be doing with my first graders as we return to school in the New Year.  I am printing it out just so I can be ready for when they come back.  After Christmas, I am NOT going to want to think about going back to school but at least I'll be prepared!  I hope you have something ready as well.  We all know the next week or so will fly by but the students will be waiting and ready for some winter fun!  I hope you enjoy using this theme unit as much as I enjoyed making it!

Your Students Can Be Eggsperts!

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 1 comment

I have to say, I really love using the Eggspert game in my classroom!  The buzzers give students a chance to play in a Jeopardy-like way which they have so much fun doing!  This game is so simple to pull out when I want to do a review and the students are always begging to use it!  This is the cheapest I have found the game as I would like to purchase a second one for my classroom.  If you haven't checked it out, you're missing out!  :0)

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Math in the Sky!

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 1 comment

I couldn't believe this shot of the sky I got on my way to work one day!  Inspired by the book, Butterfly Alphabet by Kajell B. Sandved, I took pictures of the sky for my math class.  It is a great "real-world" connection to parallel and intersecting lines!  It's amazing that math can be found everywhere!

STAMP, STAMP, STAMP!

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 2 comments

Okay, everyone, don't laugh at me...when I was at BINGO the other night (I only do it once in awhile and it was for Christmas baskets), I had an idea!  I always use BINGO daubers to mark student agendas in red, yellow, or green according to their daily behavior.  However, I have never used them for anything else in class.  Then it hit me!  I could use them to have the students STAMP their Word Wall Words!  So, I got out these and some letter stamps and set up three centers in my classroom.  I taped bulletin board paper across the tables and let the students go to town!  They did not make a peep the whole thirty minutes!  They stamped and spelled and have been asking to do it every day since!  My friend, Sharon, is making some printable words for early learners to use with the BINGO daubers and I will be sure to pass along the link to that when it becomes available.  Try it and see what you think!  Also, comment if you have any other ideas for how to use these in class.

My New Favorite Tool- EXPO Bright Sticks!

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 5 comments
If you haven't checked these out, yet, go get some NOW!

These are so great for so many classroom projects!  They allow you to make the walls, doors, windows, etc. of the classroom look like those cute signs at Starbucks!  I have written on the cabinets for science vocabulary and on the door with winter words!  By far, my favorite use has been writing words on the word wall!  No more annoying cards to laminate and cut out!  Just shake, write, and smile!  Here is a picture of my word wall using the EXPO bright sticks...
This is my classroom door...

This is my cabinet...

The sky is the limit!  I would seriously go purchase these.  They are around $18.00 and they have made my life so much easier!

'Tis the Season to Be Jolly!

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with No comments
I don't know about you, but I am in such a jolly mood!  My tree is up and decorated, online presents have been ordered, and the weather is getting er uh, warmer?!?  Well, you can't win them all! :0)  Snow days will eventually come!

How about you?  Have you been feeling jolly, yet?  Are your students getting excited about the upcoming holiday?  Mine are already making their lists and checking them twice.  It seems like the Christmas pencils I gave them today paled in comparison to what they are asking for Christmas!  I feel like I need to stock my prize bin with video games and laptops! LOL!

On a serious note, how do you celebrate the holidays in your classroom?  Do you use the word, "Christmas", or do you have a "Winter Celebration"?  Have you created any cute activities that you think others would like to use in their classrooms?  If so, leave a comment and let everyone know!

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season!

Easy Word Work Centers

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with No comments
My first graders LOVE word work and the best part is, it didn't take much work on my part to make it fun!  Here are some simple things I did to make working with words exciting and I did not spend a ton of time or money to make it happen!

1.  I asked teachers with older kids to donate any old word games they had at home.
2.  I found nice Melissa and Doug wooden magnetic letters at a Tuesday Morning store for about $3.00.
3.  I utilized the Promethean Board to play games (which are already made on the program).  If you don't have an electronic white board, give the kids dry-erase markers and a regular white board- they still have a blast making words!
4.  We have one computer but it is great to keep two students busy playing on Starfall or ABC Mouse.

Learning doesn't have to take too much time or money!  Post some ideas you have for cheap and easy centers!

Newest Site I LOVEEEE!!!

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 2 comments
Hi there!  I am so excited that I found a new site that I just LOVE!  It is found at http://www.abcmouse.com/ and it is FREE for public school teachers!  I was searching the Internet this morning looking for online activities for my preschooler when I came across this site.  It has activities for learners from 2 years old up through elementary school.  I have to say, it is the BEST!  The teacher can add students to her classroom and differentiate the level of learning based on the needs of the student.  I was happy that I could use this for my son at the Pre-K level as well as for my first graders!  I was so pleased to be able to adjust the level of learning to match my first graders' needs.  As you can tell, I am LOVING this FREE site, so please go check it out and let me know how it worked for you!  Happy Learning!

Visualizing

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with No comments

I was searching for a great book to use for visualizing when I came across this fabulous book by Pat Hutchins. In it, the wind blows several objects away as the owners chase after them!  The students really loved this book and I barely heard a peep out of them as I was reading!  To teach the lesson, we began by doing a visualizing exercise with white boards.  I described a scene with a tree, a flower, the sun, a bird, and a house.  Students were to draw the scene as it looked in their minds.  We stood in a circle and showed our pictures to the class and discussed why they were similar but not the same!  It was because we all had different schema, of course!
Then, I introduced the book, The Wind Blew (I had the cover hidden).  I told the students I was going to read it and they would draw the pictures they saw in their minds, reminding them that good readers visualize as they read.  After each page, they would draw and share their pictures with an elbow partner.  Then, we would look at what the illustrator drew and talk about the words in the text that helped us to visualize.  The students were so engaged and were having fun visualizing!  At the end, they made a prediction about what they thought would happen, but there was a surprise ending...the wind blew out to sea and left all of the objects behind.  They were all mixed up (the students laughed so hard at the mixed up objects and people).
After the reading and discussing, we talked about how much fun it was to visualize.  We made a promise to visualize and make mental pictures every time we read.  We talked about how we make mental pictures even when the illustrator has made them for us because our schema helps us to see the book differently!
I highly recommend this for your first graders!  You will love the lesson as much as they do! :0)  Happy Teaching!

No first day of school- WHAT?!?

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 2 comments

So, Hurricane Irene has decided she doesn't want to go back to school!  The first day of school in my county in Maryland will be cancelled due to the storm damage.  I have never in my life heard of the first day of school being cancelled!  I am so disappointed that I won't see the students tomorrow but I am glad to be able to finish some tasks before the first day.

I will, however, use Hurricane Irene as a teaching opportunity.  Perhaps we will read about hurricanes this week and map each state that was affected by it.  We can create an analogy about how the conditions need to be just right for a hurricane to occur and compare it to how success in the classroom depends on that same type of scenario.  I hope this is all that Mother Nature has in store for this school year as I am sure she has a few snowstorms up her sleeve as well!  Is anyone else off of school tomorrow due to Irene?  Tell us about it by commenting below!

New Favorite Site!

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 1 comment
Okay, so I began decorating my new first grade classroom today and realized how much I still enjoy doing it year after year!  I absolutely LOVE being a classroom teacher!  As I was hanging fabric on my bulletin boards, I was thinking of ways I could be more creative.  To help myself along, I did what every other teacher would do...take a walk down the hallway and check out what others were doing.  I went into my second grade friend's classroom when she showed me some of the projects she had been working on.  She was using her Cricut machine which she got at JoAnn Fabrics for $50!  It was a smaller machine but with the sale and teacher discount, she got it at a great price!  She had made so many cute things with her Cricut and when she told me she had gotten the ideas from blogs, a lightbulb went off!  "Ooooooooh," I thought, "a blog with Cricut ideas for the classroom?!?"  I know, I was getting excited, too!  So, I haven't had much time to peruse but this site happened to be the first I visited and I liked it.  Check it out if you have time!  Also, if you have used the Cricut for classroom materials, let us know!

Back from Vacation!

Edit Posted by The Wooden Shutter with 1 comment
Whew!  I am finally back from a fun-filled vacation to Hilton Head, SC!  It was fabulous and as always, I learned so much to share with my class!  I am eagerly awaiting the beginning of the school year (1 week and counting) and tomorrow, I will enter my new classroom for the first time.  First grade, here I come!  I must say, at this point I am going through my mental checklist of routines to be sure the year starts off well!  I would love it if you could share your favorite routines such as pencil sharpening, bathroom breaks, classroom jobs, etc.  How do you help your classroom run efficiently for the school year?  What techniques do you use that are a faithful "go-to" each year?

Be sure to share your products and how many you've made here- this way we can all compete! Just post with your name/blog/website and product below! All who participate are eligible to win a first prize $10.00 gift certificate to Scrappin' Doodles!  You will also receive my "Essential Back-to-School Resource" as well as "Monthly Newsletter Templates" from Pre-K Paradise!  Two second place winners will receive both the EBTS Resource and MNT.  Three third place winners will receive the EBTSR.  I know this will help you get ready for the new school year! The contest will run from Friday, August 5th until Thursday, August 11th!  Good luck and get moving! :0)

Check out the new resource I just posted on TpT and TeachersNotebook! Both stores have AMAZING sales running right now so I would get it before the sales expire!

There are two ways to pick up "The Essential Back to School Resource":

Follow this link to TpT: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Essential-Back-to-School-Resource

Follow this link to TeachersNotebook: http://www.teachersnotebook.com/shop/TeachingTales

I hope you enjoy using it as much as I enjoyed creating it! I am very excited to use this resource with my new first graders!!!
