Love is in the Air!

Love is in the air as Valentine's Day quickly approaches! I was thinking of a way to incorporate the theme of "love" into my students learning activities and decided to have them complete a "Poets We LOVE!" activity. As part of our immersion section of our poetry unit, students explore a variety of poets and poems. I have them rate the selected books according to how many we use and discuss why some were preferred over others. Students were then asked to select their favorite poet and illustrate the poem in order to share the mood of the poem with the class. As I handed out posters and markers, excitement filled the air as students buzzed about which poem they would choose and what they were going to sketch. Some even asked to finish the activity during recess! (I KNOW!) Once they are hung in the hallway, I will add a photgraph for you to see. This was a fun way to dig in to our poetry unit and I hope that by the end, the poems they create will be hung next to poems that inspired them!
